Bedding: Styling Your Sanctuary’s Centerpiece

The linens on your bed probably change with the season. A beautiful linen coverlet is great for the summer but it may be replaced with a faux fur throw for a cold winter night. So let’s talk about how you can style your bed to keep it looking great and feeling comfortable, all year long.

A decorative pillow in front of shams is always a nice touch.

My preference is to keep it structured and layered. The first layer is your sheets. They are the foundation of your bed and not just from a visual standpoint – their quality is paramount to your night’s sleep! The second layer is a wonderfully soft coverlet that you can use alone in the summer and layer on top of in cooler months. If you have a sheet you want to show off (which you should!), pull your flat sheet up as far as possible to fold about two-thirds over your coverlet.

Next, an accent at the end of your bed is an opportunity to add in a coordinating pattern. The piece can be lightweight or heavier, folded or draped. Now you have three textures and patterns to work with, each about equally exposed.

If pillows are your thing, layer that up too! Put your sheet-set pillows in the back and decorative shams in front. Or, for a more polished look, get a double set of shams and use one set on your sleeping pillows. If you have a king bed, use three euro shams to more fully cover the width of the bed. A decorative pillow in the front for a punch of accent color is always a nice touch.

Happy layering and sweet dreams!
