Textured Floors Make Your Space More Spectacular

So you’re updating a room — you’ve chosen colors, furniture and accessories — but it still feels flat. You could be leaving out an important element — texture. By adding an element of texture — like a rustic floor — you can change the way the space feels. Textured floors can do a lot for a room. Nobody understands better than L.A.-based interior designer, Erinn Valencich. She uses texture in surprising ways to add depth and warmth to her room designs.

”Texture brings a room to life. It allows the eye to see contrast — even if everything in the room is white.“ Erinn Valencich

One of the ways Valencich brings interest to a space is through highly textured flooring. Rustic or distressed floors are a great contrast to both shiny and smooth surfaces that may be used in designing a space. They present an excellent backdrop to many of the smooth architectural finishes popular these days. Valencich suggests pairing textured floors with warm natural finishes like polished concrete, Venetian plaster or some of the faux stone wallpapers popular today.

Textured Floors at Home

In this Malibu beach home, Valencich chose textured laminate flooring with a reclaimed look to balance the smoother finishes of the furniture, walls and accessories. She notes that the texture in the floor catches the light differently throughout the day transforming its look. While the floor looks like a true reclaimed hardwood floor, Valencich actually chose the Reclaimé laminate floor from Quick•Step because it was comfortable underfoot, plus it is specially coated to resist staining, scuffing, and scratching . The weathered look plays up the “beachy” feeling of the home and gives a time-worn effect, which is easy to live on and perfect for families with kids and pets.

Textured Floors Offer A Variety of Finishes

Consumers can now choose from a variety of surface textures that make a laminate floor look vintage, distressed or rustic.

Wire-brushed

Wire-brushed surface textures have evolved over the past few years with the increased interest in custom or artisan looks. Wire-brushing pulls the soft grain from the wood leaving the harder heartwood exposed while still maintaining a smooth surface. The Elevae™ collection offers a variety of wire-brushed oak looks with rich muted colors and a matte finish.

Hand-scraped

This once-common technique has made a comeback recently. Woodworkers use a draw knife instead of sandpaper to smooth the plank. Properly used, the draw knife actually creates a smoother surface, and gives the wood a distinctive, old-time warmth. You’ll find a variety of options for the hand-scraped look in the Dominion collection.

Soft-scraped

Planks that have been soft-scraped look like true artisan floors. The planks appear to have been scraped or tooled by hand to create soft ridges on the flooring. Check out Malaysian Merbau, Nickel Oak and Sesame Maple in the Dominion collection.

 Cerusé

Cerusé is a French technique for finishing wood to create a unique character. To achieve the look, craftsmen stain the wood surface darker and paint over the grain with white or grey paint, resulting in a highly accentuated grain. The Veranda Oak planks from the Reclaimé™ collection feature a look that emulates Cerusé with a more durable, easy to maintain surface.

Sandblasted

The movement in the wood grain is highlighted by sandblasting to create a subtle, textural depth. The trend, very popular in premium flooring, is replicated in the Envique collection in our beautiful Lineage Oak.

Textured Floors Are Cutting Edge

Although many of today’s popular laminate floors are inspired by vintage and aged looks, the technology that Quick•Step puts into building them is cutting edge. They’re durable enough for even the toughest families. They resist dents and dings from high heels, dropped objects, or heavy furniture. Stains wipe away, even tough stains like wine and nail polish.
